Seaman Training
Centre, was established in Juldia East Pakistan in 1960 to
conduct training of ratings for employment on national fleet and
foreign flag ships. Since then it was functioning at different
locations under make shift arrangements. As the developments and
revolutionary changes in the operational and manning systems
demanded training of ratings on realistic and firm footings to
suite the modern ships, working environment, the need was felt
to set up a proper training facility for in-resident trainees to
keep the trainees in resident, so that discipline and ship-life
culture can be inculcated in them to promote cooperation and
sense of comradeship. Consequently the PC-I was prepared to set
up proper training centre to achieve above-mentioned objectives.
On the other
hand with the debacle of East Pakistan and consequent loss of
Juldia Marine Academy (Chittagong) in 1971; Pakistan Marine
Academy (PMA) was set up here in Karchi, and was housed
temporarily in the barracks of Haji Camp which was also STC’s
temporary campus at that time. This PMA also required its proper
Campus with all the training facilities for cadets of both
streams viz a viz namely, Nautical and Engineering. So it was
decided to put both the training institutions in the same
campus, so that optimism use of training facilities could be
made through sharing them together. Thus a project was proposed
for Pakistan Maritime Academy. In 1979 both the institutions (i.e
PMA & STC) were shifted inside, at the existing location of
this complex at Mauripur road Karachi. Both, these organizations
continued working independently as sub-ordinate offices of Ports
& Shipping Wing; Ministry of Communications until May, 1997;
when these were merged together. Commandant PMA is head of the
Pakistan Maritime Academy and OI/C is the Incharge of STW.
Seamen Training Centre (STC) was renamed as Seamen Training Wing
(STW).
