PRE – SEA COURSES
1.The following Pre-sea Courses are conducted at
the Pakistan
Marine Academy, Karachi:
a.
Two Year course leading to award of BSc (Maritime Studies)
degree.
b. Four month course for GP-III Training
2.
Two Year course leading to award of BSc (Maritime Studies)
This Course
begins each year in the first week of January. Applicants for
this Course are required to fulfill the following conditions for
admission:
a. They
must have completed twelve at least years of formal education leading to the award
of a Higher Secondary
School (FSc / Intermediate) Certificate in (Pre–Engineering) in at least second division. Students of
Science, General Group (with Physics
and Computer Science) are also eligible to apply for Nautical Branch
only. Students who have passed any equivalent
examination are also acceptable, provided the University of
Karachi recognizes their qualification as equivalent to the
Higher Secondary School (FSc / Intermediate) Certificate
b.
Age: Not more than 20 years on 31st
December of the year in which applying. (relaxable by one year for those belonging to
FATA/FANA and Azad Kashmir.)
c. They must be
medically fit. Medical examination will be conducted in Military
Hospitals designated by the Academy. In addition, the applicants shall be required to
pass the "visual and colour perception test", from the Mercantile
Marine Department, Karachi, after final selection.
Failures of this test will not be eligible for admission in PMA.
3. The two - years’
Course is divided into four Semesters, each of about five
months duration, allowing about six weeks vacation during June and
July every year, and about two weeks in December/January.
4. The Cadets may,
upon their choice and subject to availability of seats, opt for
Nautical Branch or the Marine Engineering Branch. A BSc degree in the
Nautical Sciences will qualify them to serve as Deck Officers on board
the merchant ships, while a BSc degree in the Ship Technology will
enable them to be employed as Marine Engineers on board merchant ships.
Marine Engineering cadets are required to undergo one year
apprenticeship training at an appropriate Marine Engineering
Workshop after passing out of the Academy, before they are
awarded a BSc Degree.
5. As a matter of
policy, Academy accepts foreign cadets only if they are
sponsored by their respective Governments.
6. Cadets are
required to be resident at the Academy while they attend the
two-year course. Cadets are also expected to strictly adhere to
the discipline of the Academy. The Commandant reserves the right
to withdraw any cadet on disciplinary grounds or to award any
retribution for infringement of the rules.

B – PRE – SEA TRAINING FOR RATINGS
The pre –
sea training for GP III ratings is conducted at the
Seamen Training Centre - a subordinate organization of the
Pakistan
Marine
Academy, located within the Academy Campus. This Course is of
five months duration and conducted twice each year, commencing
in January and July.
To be eligible
for admission to the GP. III training, an applicant must
fulfill the following conditions:
1. He must have
completed ten years studies at the school and must have passed
Secondary School Certificate or equivalent examinations.
2. He must be
within 18 to 25 years of age on the date of commencement of the
Course.
3. He must be
medically fit. The medical examination is conducted at military
hospitals designated by the Academy.

Marine
Academy provides limited medical facilities. For treatments
requiring hospitalization outside the Academy, charges shall be
payable by the individual cadet or by his Government.
2.
Uniform is provided by the Academy. Charges are payable at the
time of admission to the Academy.
II.
FOR G. P. III TRAINEES:
The total
charges payable by a foreign trainee for the five-month’s G.P.
III Training are U.S. $ 600.00 (U.S. Dollars Six hundred
only) for the day scholars. This includes cost of the tuition
fees; stationary, textbooks and examinations charges; amenity &
sports; and uniform charges. The in – resident foreign trainees
are required to pay an additional U.S. $ 600.00 (U.S.
Dollars Six hundred only), which will cover the cost of
boarding, lodging, medical (as described in the case of the
cadets above), maintenance, utilities and services, barber and
laundry charges.
